NHS spending cuts

While spending on the NHS has tripled since 1997 to a figure of around £110 billion and of course the issue of nursing jobs has always been a political hot potato, uncertainty over the level of spending cuts to come is clearly troubling for nurses.

David Cameron, the leader of the Conservative Party has emphasised his support for the NHS, particularly after his experiences when his son Ivan died last year. However, nurses polled in a recent survey believed that the NHS was safest in Labour Party hands. Overall though, nurses are skeptical about the levels of financial support than any political party can give the NHS in these challenging times.

The chief executive for the health service in England, David Nicholson, has warned that there could be a need for efficiency savings in the NHS of up to £15bn in the three years after 2011.

Former Health Secretary Andy Burnham admitted that the health service would face a “challenge" over the next five to 10 years, but said raising concerns of closures or job cuts were "completely premature". He explained, "The NHS is well-placed to deal with the tough economic times ahead. I will make it my priority to focus the NHS on prevention, quality and innovation. That way it will be best placed to get the most out of every pound the public puts in and better placed to maximise efficiency."

The Conservative Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley has said, "We are committed to real terms increases in spending on the NHS because as our population ages demand will increase. But if we are going to improve the quality of healthcare in this country we will need to make substantial improvements using current resources. The idea of getting more for less must apply in the NHS just as in any other public service."

In these financially challenging times it's generally recognised that NHS hospitals need to be staffed by efficient professionals who care about the standards of health service being delivered.
