Nursing Pay Survey

A recent independent survey* asked 640 nurses and midwives about their views on pay has suggested that the majority of nurses believe they are worth a pay rise that is at least in line with inflation. Currently the UK inflation figure is running at 4.4% according to the latest RPI index, and 83% of nurses surveyed support a pay rise of over 3% while the current level of increase is running at 2.5%.

It may not help that this can be compared to the substantial pay received by some Chief Executives at NHS Trusts, some receiving more than £150,000 per annum. The pay expectations of nurses do not appear outlandish by those standards. Indeed some Senior Managers of NHS hospitals received an average of 7% increase in pay last year.

Interestingly, when questioned about the impact of the General Election outcome 41% believed that none of the three main political parties could be trusted to effectively run the NHS, and 38% believed that Labour would have been the most sympathetic towards the Service.

The watchword at the moment is efficiency, with the cost cutting focussing on the back room staff, cutting beaurocracy and flattening the management structure. However no area is without scrutiny, and when faced with a question on efficiency savings over 85% of the nurses surveyed felt that ‘some' or even ‘large' savings could be made by changing the way NHS hospitals are run. Seemingly this would suggest the nurses feel that their skill sets are not being utilised to the best advantage and their views are being largely ignored. There was also the suggestion that the management of the hospitals they work in could be more efficient and less wasteful.

With the financially challenging times set to continue for some time, the need for staffing the NHS with efficient professionals with a drive for high standards is essential.
